Finding Motivation in Difficult Times

by Lisa Cybaniak

LaNette Kincaid openly talks about surviving domestic violence and a sudden illness, and using those experiences as motivation to help others.

*Trigger Warning*

The way we view the world and our place in it depends on many factors, like our past experiences. When you grow up with domestic violence, it doesn’t just affect your view on healthy relationships or your expectations on how to be treated when in a relationship. Domestic violence also affects your emotional, psychological and mental health.

LaNette Kincaid is a Christian businesswoman, author, and the founder of Women with Gifts, a non-profit organisation supporting low-income women. Her foundation is making a huge difference to the lives of women, in many ways. For example, her Coat Drive Concert event gives coats to single mothers

Meet LaNette Kincaid

LaNette is no stranger to the long-term effects of domestic violence. She is also no stranger to a sudden and baffling illness threatening to end her life. But in the midst of it all, she was given new purpose. Instead of listening to the mantra telling her she couldn’t do it, she battled back. She founded Women with Gifts as a way to help educate other women about the three silent killers of women, at the time: Domestic violence, sexual assault, and breast cancer. She wrote her book, Women Are Roses to inspire women, showing them that if she could get through her challenges, so could they.

Are you ready to learn how LaNette surpassed it all and found the motivation to build her organisation, become an author, and dedicate herself in the service of others?

So, let’s dive right in!

Have a desire for change

After growing up in a violent home, witnessing domestic violence against her mother daily, LaNette learned that is what a healthy relationship looked like. When she began to date, she didn’t have an interest in relationships with men who treated her with respect and love because that wasn’t ‘normal’ to her.

It wasn’t long before she found herself in her own domestic violence situation, suffering mentally, emotionally and physically.

Even though she had been conditioned to believe this was ‘normal’ and healthy, she suddenly realised this isn’t what she wanted; she didn’t sign up for this!

That’s when she made the decision to break this cycle, stand up for herself, and leave to find what she truly deserved: Happiness, respect and love.

Find your passion

A few years ago, LaNette literally woke up one morning after suffering memory loss from an unknown illness, and didn’t know how to read or write, dress herself, or anything about her business. Can you even imagine?

Thinking she was dying, and spending months in recovery, LaNette found her motivation to not only get healthy, but build another successful business. How? She found her passion.

She prayed to God asking to have the chance to help other women through teaching all her knowledge on how to overcome adversity, keep going when down and out, and how to start a business. That passion to teach women so they can then teach others was the greatest motivation to found her non-profit organisation and start focusing on helping low-income women.

For LaNette to be determined to live so that she can teach other women how to rise above any challenge, is literally incredible and inspiring. We could all learn so much from LaNette, her experiences, and her attitude about life and helping others.

More from this episode

LaNette and I talk about so much more in this episode, like exactly what she did when she took ill: She gathered her family to tell them just what she needed from them to make her life easier. That is something most of us wouldn’t even think to do, yet it made such a huge difference for her during this time and brought the family closer together.

She is doing so much for others – much of which we didn’t even get a chance to talk about, so I’ll bring LaNette back soon. One of her projects is her book, “Women Are Roses”, which is a series featuring stories from women around the world. If you’d like to be part of the next book, please contact LaNette directly at [email protected].  All the profits from the books go back to the Women with Gifts non-profit organisation, supporting low-income women.

When we help just one person rise up against their challenges, they learn and grow. And when that happens, they help others in the same way, whether by leading by example, giving advice, telling their story, or even starting a business.

You just never know how great an impact you are having right now on the lives of the people you meet. Make it count. Stop fretting about what others will say if you tell your story, for example. You’re the only one who can!

Remember to live your life on purpose. Create the habits you want, express the love you have for people, and do the things that will bring joy to your heart.
